The State Government has doled out a total sum of four point five million naira to the State's Contingent to the just concluded National Youths Games that took place in Ilorin.
Out of the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja which participated in the Sporting Event, the State Team emerged fifth best with seven gold, three silver and eight bronze medals across six events including Sprint, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Cricket, Chess and Karate.
The governor during the meeting announced the prize money of two hundred thousand naira, one hundred and fifty thousand naira and one hundred thousand naira for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists respectively while the nine Coaches that led the team got two hundred thousand naira each.
The Commissioner for Youths Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Dr Uju Nworgu also at the Exco meeting, presented a letter of Commendation from the Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalung to Governor Obiano for his uncommon commitment to Sports Development.
Receiving the team, Governor Obiano said Sports is a major enabler in his administration's wheel of development through which it aims to create the opportunity for Youths to realize their full potentials.
According to him, the largesse to the Medalists is to encourage more exploits by Ndi Anambra that will bring honor to the state across various spheres.
Earlier while presenting the medalists, the Youths Commissioner, Dr Nworgu acknowledged that the State has continued to record exceptional performances at both local and international sporting competitions because of the support the present administration is giving the sector.
She revealed that due to the outstanding performance of the State's Chess Team, they have been selected to represent Nigeria later this year at the African Youths Championship billed to hold in Tunisia, adding that with the interest Governor Obiano is showing in the sector, the team will surely make the country proud.
Some of the medalists, Mr Ikem Okolie who won gold in Sprint and Mr Kene Okafor with a gold in Wrestling, thanked Governor Obiano for the recognition which they noted will spur them towards greater achievements in future competitions.
